Sunrise started in 1961 as Sunrise Golf Village and grew west until it reached the Everglades. Today the city mixes large condo communities with single-family neighborhoods, and the two fail in different spots, so we inspect them differently.

Condo and 55+ communities
Mice in a Condo Building: Who Calls, and What Gets Sealed
A large part of Sunrise lives in condo communities, many of them for adults 55 and older. Sunrise Lakes Phase III, for example, is a 55+ community of low-rise concrete block buildings built in 1979. In buildings like these, a mouse in one kitchen is often coming from a wall chase, a pipe run or a trash room that several units share.
That is why spraying or trapping one unit rarely ends it. The fix usually needs 2 parts: sealing inside your unit (under sinks, behind the stove and fridge, around the water heater) and sealing the shared parts of the building, which the association controls.

The western edge
Living Where Sunrise Ends and the Everglades Begin
The Sawgrass Expressway starts in Sunrise, and for its first 12 miles the Everglades lies just west of the road. Markham Park, a 666 acre county park at 16001 W. State Road 84, sits along the levee with wide views of the marsh and a canal running beside I-595.
Homes on the west end of the city are close to canals, retention lakes and open land. Norway rats like to burrow in soft banks near water, and roof rats use palms, ficus hedges and power lines to reach roofs. When nearby land is cleared or a canal bank is mowed, rodents move to the closest shelter, which is often a garage or shed.
About 10% of the city’s area is water, so lake lots are common all over Sunrise, not just in the west.

The City of Sunrise rules for carts and bulk trash are not written about rodents, but following them takes away a lot of easy food and shelter. Here is how each rule helps.

Quick Fixes That Let Rats Come Right Back
Roof rats breed all year in Florida. UF/IFAS reports 5 to 8 pups per litter and 4 to 5 litters a year, so anything that only kills a few rats while the gaps stay open buys you a few quiet weeks at most.
Real rodent exclusion means closing every gap with sheet metal, 1/4 inch hardware cloth or concrete, then trapping what is left inside. Our team is EPA and FDACS certified, and every Florida pest control company should hold a license under Chapter 482, Florida Statutes. Ask for it.
What usually fails
- Plug-in sound devices. There is no good evidence they move rats out.
- Peppermint, mothballs and sprays. No repellent is registered for roof rats.
- Expanding foam. Rats chew through it in a night.
- Poison inside a condo or attic. The smell from a rat dying in the wall can last for weeks.
- Sealing only your unit. In shared buildings, the openings in common areas matter too.
