No. Most of the time the tree can stay. The goal is a gap of several feet between the branches and the roof, plus sealing every opening on the house. Once rats cannot drop onto the roof or find a way in, the tree stops being a problem.

Squirrels are busy in the morning and late afternoon. Rats are quiet in the day and active a few hours after dark. Dark, pointed droppings about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long and greasy rub marks on beams point to roof rats.

You will always have wild rodents nearby, but they do not have to get inside. A sealed house, tight sheds and a yard with no open food sources keep them outside. We pay close attention to sheds, woodpiles and pool equipment on wooded lots.

The city picks up yard waste on Wednesday. Put limbs and bags out close to pickup instead of days ahead, and keep cut limbs to 4 feet long and 4 inches across so they are collected the first time.
