Running in the ceiling
Quick footsteps or scratching above the ceiling after dark. Roof rats are most active a few hours after sunset.
Scratching in the attic at night or droppings in the garage? Florida Rodent Control Pros removes rats and mice from Holly Hill homes and businesses, from the older streets near Pine Grove and Dixie Highway to the newer blocks west of Nova Road. We find how they get in, seal it, and remove the rodents already inside.

Call (561) 562-7607Holly Hill is a small city of about 4.5 square miles wedged between Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach, with the Halifax River running along its east side. Old Florida bungalows near Pine Grove and Dixie Highway sit close to the water, while newer block homes west of Nova Road sit further inland. Both bring rats, just from different directions.
Near the river, Norway rats burrow along seawalls, drainage ditches and canal banks, then move into garages and ground-floor gaps during heavy rain. In October 2024, Hurricane Milton caused what the city’s own mayor called the worst flooding in Holly Hill’s history, with the Anniston Avenue area hit hardest and raw sewage backing up into yards from the city’s roughly 80-year-old pipe system. Flooding like that pushes ground-dwelling rodents out of their burrows and toward the nearest dry structure, which is often a home or garage.
Away from the water, roof rats are the bigger issue. They travel oak branches and power lines into older homes near Pine Grove and Holly Hill Plaza, and into newer block-and-stucco homes further west, entering through soffit gaps, roof vents and gaps around AC lines. We inspect every Holly Hill property for both patterns, since a house 3 blocks from the river can have a completely different problem than one near US-1.
Most Holly Hill jobs combine a few of these: an inspection, sealing, trapping and cleanup. Choose a service to learn more, or call and we will tell you what your property needs.
Rodents move at night, so most Holly Hill homeowners find these clues before they ever see one. If you notice 2 or more, it is time for an inspection.
Quick footsteps or scratching above the ceiling after dark. Roof rats are most active a few hours after sunset.
Dark pellets about 1/2 inch long point to rats. Tiny ones about 1/8 inch point to mice.
Rats gnaw on wiring, AC insulation and irrigation lines. This can lead to shorts, leaks and costly repairs.
Small burrow openings near a slab, shed or ditch bank are a sign of Norway rats working close to the ground.
Urine and nesting material leave a sharp odor, often strongest in closets, cabinets and the attic hatch.
Dogs or cats staring at a wall, sniffing under appliances or pawing at a cabinet often sense rodents first.
Roof rats cause most attic calls away from the water, Norway rats show up near the Halifax River, drainage ditches and dumpsters, and house mice get into kitchens and pantries. Knowing which one you have tells us where to look and how to stop it.
Every job in Holly Hill starts with a full inspection, inside and out. We look for how rodents get in, where they live, and what is feeding them.
Trapping alone does not fix the problem if the openings stay open. We close the way in first, then remove the rodents already inside.
The CDC links rats and mice to several diseases. People can get sick from contact with droppings, urine or saliva, from bites, or from breathing dust from contaminated areas.

We look at the whole property, from the roofline to the riverbank. What we check depends on how close the home sits to the water and how it was built.
A rat can squeeze through a gap about 1/2 inch wide, and a mouse through about 1/4 inch.
Setting traps without sealing the openings only buys time. We follow the same 5 steps on every job so the rats do not come back.
We walk the property, check the attic and mark every entry point and sign of activity.
Openings are closed with metal flashing, 1/4 inch hardware cloth, mesh and mortar. We do not rely on foam.
Traps go on the paths rats use. We check them on return visits and remove what we catch.
Droppings and nests are removed and the area is disinfected. We tell you if insulation needs replacing.
We come back until there are no new signs, then give you simple tips to keep it that way.
The number of visits depends on how many rats are inside and how many openings the home has. We tell you what to expect after the first inspection.
According to the CDC, rats and mice can spread disease through their droppings, urine, saliva and bites. These are the main concerns.
Can spread when dust from dried droppings or urine is stirred up and breathed in. This is why you should never sweep droppings.
Spread through water or soil that has rodent urine in it. Standing water after heavy rain or storm flooding is a real concern here.
Food and counters touched by rodents or their droppings can carry salmonella bacteria.
Spread by bites or scratches, or by handling rodents. Always use gloves or tools, never bare hands.
Rodents carry fleas and mites that can move to pets and people after the rodents are gone.
Chewed wires can start fires, and chewed water or AC lines can cause leaks inside walls.
A lot of common advice makes a rat problem last longer. Here is what actually works.
A single mouse in the kitchen can sometimes be handled with a few snap traps. Rats in the attic or along the riverbank are a different job.
The problem with DIY: most store-bought fixes catch rats but leave the openings in place, so new rats move in from the yard, the ditch bank or the river.
Ask a technician →| Situation | DIY | Professional |
|---|---|---|
| One mouse seen once | Snap traps may be enough | Call if it comes back |
| Noises in the attic | Hard to reach and seal safely | Roofline sealing and attic trapping |
| Droppings in several rooms | Usually means many rodents | Full inspection and plan |
| Chewed wires or AC lines | Risk of fire or leaks | Find the source and seal it |
| Dead rodent smell | Hard to locate in walls | Locate, remove and deodorize |
| Burrows near the river or a ditch | Hard to treat safely near water | Bait and seal ground-level entry points |
From older homes near Pine Grove and Dixie Highway to newer block-and-stucco homes west of Nova Road, each Holly Hill home has its own weak spots. We check the roofline, attic, garage and yard, then seal the openings rats are using.
We check soffits, vents and roof edges, then walk you through what we found.
Openings are closed with metal flashing, hardware cloth and mortar, not foam alone.
Indoor trapping avoids dead rodents in the walls and keeps bait away from kids and pets.
We remove droppings and nests and tell you if insulation should be replaced.
Shops and restaurants along Ridgewood Avenue and around Holly Hill Plaza deal with daily deliveries, shared dumpsters and doors that open all day. Florida restaurants are inspected by the DBPR Division of Hotels and Restaurants, and signs of rodents are something inspectors look for.
Regular visits to check traps and stations, planned around your business hours.
A record of each visit that you can show a manager or inspector.
Door sweeps and gaps at docks and walls closed with rodent-proof materials.
Simple changes to dumpster areas and dry storage that make your site less attractive to rats.
Holly Hill has homes from the early 1900s through today. The way a house is built, and how close it sits to the Halifax River, tells us where to look first.
Holly Hill is small, but the areas near the river, along Dixie Highway and further west each bring a different rodent problem.
Older homes closest to the Halifax River. Norway rats burrow along ditches and yard edges here, especially after heavy rain.
A mix of older homes and small businesses along the historic US-1 corridor. Roof rats and Norway rats both show up here.
Hit hardest by Hurricane Milton flooding in October 2024. Storm repairs and stormwater issues make sealing new gaps a priority here.
Shopping and restaurant sites with shared dumpsters. We set up scheduled commercial service with written logs here.
Newer block-and-stucco subdivisions further from the river. Roof edges and AC line gaps are the usual entry points.
A small commercial core along Ridgewood Avenue near City Hall, with older buildings that share walls and rooflines.
Holly Hill has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters too warm to slow rodents down. They stay active all year, but the weather changes where they go.
Afternoon storms from June to September raise water levels along the Halifax River and in low yards, pushing Norway rats toward garages, sheds and any dry ground.
Tip: Keep garage doors closed and clear stored items off the floor.
Hurricane Milton caused what Holly Hill’s mayor called the worst flooding in the city’s history in October 2024, with the Anniston Avenue area hit hardest and sewage backing up from the city’s aging pipe system. Flooding pushes ground-dwelling rats out of burrows and into homes, and storm-damaged siding and soffits give them new ways in.
Tip: After any storm or heavy flooding, walk around the house and check the roofline and skirting.
On cooler nights from December to February, rats look for warm, dry attics. This is when many Holly Hill homeowners first hear them.
Tip: Check vents and soffits in the fall, before cooler weather.
Backyard citrus and garden vegetables in older Holly Hill yards are an easy meal for roof rats, and a reason they stay close to the house.
Tip: Pick fruit as it ripens and keep fallen fruit off the ground.
Holly Hill is not one kind of property. What we do at an older home near Pine Grove is different from what we do at a block home west of Nova Road.
Homes close to the river and its drainage ditches see Norway rats burrow near the yard edge, then move toward the house when water rises.
Our approach: We inspect the yard, foundation and any crawl space, seal ground-level gaps with hardware cloth, then trap along the paths rats are using until activity stops.
Block-and-stucco homes further from the river still get roof rats through garage doors, AC line openings and roof edges.
Our approach: We check the garage and roofline first, then seal the openings we find with metal flashing and hardware cloth.
Homes repaired after Hurricane Milton flooding often have new gaps in siding, skirting or soffits where rodents can slip in.
Our approach: We do a full exterior check after storm repairs and seal any new openings before they turn into an infestation.
These steps follow CDC cleanup guidance and help keep your family safe.

Call (561) 562-7607 →Most homes need a first visit for the inspection and sealing, then follow-up visits over the next few weeks to check traps. The exact number depends on how many rats are inside and how many openings the home has. We tell you what to expect after the first inspection.
Yes. Heavy rain and storm flooding, like the flooding Holly Hill saw after Hurricane Milton in October 2024, push ground-dwelling rats out of riverside burrows and toward the nearest dry structure. If your home flooded or had storm repairs, it is worth having the exterior checked for new gaps.
We do not recommend it. Poisoned rats often die inside walls or ceilings where you cannot reach them, which causes a strong smell. Trapping indoors and sealing the openings works better.
Rats are usually active at night, while squirrels are active in the daytime. Rat droppings are about 1/2 inch long. If you are not sure, an inspection will tell us which animal it is.
The CDC advises not to sweep or vacuum droppings. Air out the area, wear gloves, spray the droppings with disinfectant or a bleach solution, let it soak for 5 minutes, then wipe up with paper towels. For attics or large amounts, call us.
