Greenacres started when Lawrence Carter Swain, a Massachusetts man, bought about 320 acres and platted the original section in 1923 as a community for working families. The town was incorporated as Greenacres City on May 24, 1926. Swain Boulevard still carries his name, and Military Trail marked the western edge of that first plat.

That history shows up in rodent work today. Lots are small, homes sit near each other and many buildings are decades old. A roof rat living in one attic can reach the next roof in a short run along a fence, a power line or a shared tree. Older homes also tend to have tired soffit vents, gaps at fascia boards and open spots around pipes where newer construction would be tighter.

Storms are part of the story too. The 1926 hurricane damaged the town’s civic building, and the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane caused widespread damage. After any big storm, a loose soffit or lifted roof edge can become a rat door, so a roof check after storm season is worth doing.

Backyard Canals and the Rats That Use Them

Greenacres is one of 13 cities inside the Lake Worth Drainage District, which watches about 500 miles of canals and 1,000 miles of canal rights-of-way across roughly 200 square miles of southeastern Palm Beach County. Commercial Rodent Control Along Lake Worth Road

Lake Worth Road turns busy and commercial once it enters Greenacres from the Florida’s Turnpike interchange, and it stays that way past Jog Road to Military Trail, where Palm Springs begins. Older homes usually have more small openings: worn soffit vents, gaps where the fascia meets the roof, and unsealed pipe and cable holes. With houses this close together, rats from nearby yards find those gaps quickly. Trapping alone will not stop it. The openings have to be sealed with metal or mesh.

In most multi-unit buildings, yes. Florida Statute 83.51(2)(a) says the landlord of a unit other than a single-family home or duplex must make reasonable provisions for exterminating rats and mice, unless the written lease says otherwise. Report the problem in writing. If you rent a house or duplex, your lease decides.

It can. Canals give rats water, cover and a path to travel. Most of the trouble comes from what sits near the water: brush piles, sheds, coconuts and dense palms. Keep the bank and the right-of-way clear and we will check the fence line, slab edges and shed bottoms for burrows.

The Lake Worth Drainage District maintains the canals and their rights-of-way. You can report large debris clogging a canal by emailing info@lwdd.net. Trash on the bank also draws rats, so it is worth reporting early.
