When the lakes rise
High Water in the Lake Theresa Basin Pushes Rodents Uphill
Deltona’s lakes are linked in chains, and some of them drain slowly. After Hurricane Ian in 2022, the city got 11 to 15 inches of rain from the storm and about 20 inches for the month of September. The Lake Theresa basin, which includes Lake Theresa, Dupont, Three Island, Angela and Butler, flooded the worst. Some lakes and ponds were still over their banks 3 weeks later, and Hurricane Milton brought more high water in 2024.
Water that sits for days or weeks floods the burrows Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) dig along banks, under sheds and beside slabs. Mice and rats living in the brush at the water’s edge also lose their cover. They do not go far. They move to the closest dry spot with food, which is often a garage, a shed full of stored items or the space behind a stacked woodpile next to the house.
That is why we see a jump in rodent calls on lakefront and low streets once the water starts to go down. Floodwater can also loosen soil at the slab edge and soak door sweeps, weather stripping and foam seals, so openings that were tight before the storm may not be now.

Waste Pro Pickup Rules That Also Cut Off Rodent Food
The City of Deltona contracts trash pickup with Waste Pro. Following the pickup rules is one of the easiest ways to stop feeding the rats on your block.
Carts
Out at 6 p.m., back by 9 p.m.
Carts may go to the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before pickup and must be off the front yard by 9 p.m. on pickup day. All garbage has to be bagged and inside the cart. A full cart with the lid propped open is an open buffet.
Yard waste
No loose piles
Up to 15 bags, cans or tied bundles a week, 50 pounds each at most. Limbs must be under 5 feet long and 6 inches across, and palm fronds stacked neatly. Loose piles are not picked up, and a pile that sits for weeks becomes a nest site.
Recycling
Rinse what goes in the cart
Deltona suspended weekly curbside recycling in February 2019. Cans, jars and food containers now go in the garbage cart, so rinse them and bag them to cut the smell that draws rodents.
