After Helene and Milton
Flooded Homes, Debris Piles and Rats on the Move
Hurricane Helene flooded homes across Bradenton in late September 2024. The city said it hauled debris from 700 to 800 flooded homes, and Mayor Gene Brown said crews had removed over 1 million pounds of debris before Hurricane Milton arrived 2 weeks later. Manatee County ordered evacuations for zones A, B and C ahead of Milton.
Storms push Norway rats out of flooded burrows along the river and creeks, and roof rats lose their nests in downed trees. They move into the closest dry space. Piles of wet drywall and furniture at the curb, and walls opened up for repairs, give them plenty of choices.
If your home was gutted and rebuilt, ask the contractor to keep gaps around new pipes, AC lines and vents closed with metal before the drywall goes back up. It is far easier than fixing it later.

The City of Bradenton collects household trash twice a week, either Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday. Keep lids closed and do not leave bags on the ground between pickups.

Yard waste goes out once a week. The city’s “3 Bs” rule says it must be bagged, bundled or in the blue bins, with limb bundles no bigger than 6 feet long and 2 feet high. Loose piles turn into rat shelter fast.
